Training successes: new and different ways to learn

Over the last few years, WRG has revolutionised its training procedures, introducing a learning management system and training database. Colleagues can now access online training modules ('E-modules') and book all of their training sessions online. WRG is working to ensure that every colleague within the company has an individual training profile online, so that they can easily check their records and plan training accordingly. At present, this only extends to operations managers, but the framework is in place for it to be transferred across the whole company.

Moore Nature Reserve

Moore Nature Reserve in Chesire, which opened in 1991, covers 200 acres of land to the south of WRG’s Arpley Landfill Site. Managed by two wardens employed by WRG, the nature reserve is open to the public at all times.

The RE3 partnership

RE3 Ltd is a partnership between WRG and the Borough Councils of Bracknell Forest, Reading and Wokingham. RE3’s purpose is to increase recycling and composting in the area, whilst reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. In 2006, WRG signed a 25-year PFI contract with the Councils, worth £611 million. This has enabled RE3 to begin redevelopment works at two key facilities in Smallmead, Reading and Longshot Lane, Bracknell.

Positive impacts of quarrying in Yorkshire

The opening of a new quarry site is often cause for concern for the surrounding community. However, WRG is working to not only allay the fears of local people, but also prove that quarrying can have positive social impacts.

Restoration of the Devil's Quoits

The Devil's Quoits, located at WRG’s Dix Pit Landfill, Oxfordshire, is a henge, built in the late Neolithic (Stone Age) period, around 4,900 to 4,600 years ago. The large circular enclosure is defined by a bank and internal ditch, which has entrances to the east and west. Within lies a circle of 28 local conglomerate stones, the Quoits, with one off-set on the south side. The Devil's Quoits would have been built by local communities for collective ceremonial practices.
